It’s the weekend and you have a hot date with a lady friend, or a man friend, or lady/man friend (KeyPA doesn’t judge). Problem is, you have exactly five dollars in your pocket to spend on the both of you—probably shouldn’t have bought that gas, eh Casanova? Don’t worry, there’s a ton of free and near free stuff to do and see, starting with:
ONE: The Sunday Sunday Sunday Show
Located at the Improv Space in Westwood (near UCLA), The Sunday Sunday Sunday Show is comedy show that takes place on…Sunday. Like the name. A mixture of stand-up, sketch, and even some improv, Sunday Sunday Sunday showcases an impressive range of talented on-the-rise comedians, some fresh from their TV and late-night appearances. Hosted by the hilarious Karl Hess, this show is amazingly fun and, best of all, amazingly free. So go on in and grab a seat!

When: 9:30 PM on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of every month.

TWO: Diddy Riese
Are you human? Then you love ice cream sandwiches. And the only thing that’s better than a delicious sandwich of cookie and ice cream is a delicious sandwich of cookie and ice cream…made right in front of you! At Diddy Riese you can get your dream chipwich custom-made, though it might be hard to choose between the freshly baked cookies and the wide flavor variety of ice creams. Just down the street from the Improv Space, treat your sweetie to a sweet—at $1.50 a sandwich you can’t go wrong.

THREE: Free Readings at Skylight Books
If you and your date are of an intellectual bent, then you need check out the best bookstore in Los Angeles: Skylight Books. Located in Los Feliz, the store hosts a huge number of readings and book signings. From student poetry readings to comic book writers like Geoff Johns talking about Green Lantern there is literally something for everyone. Read their schedule to find upcoming events, and check out the store, which boasts an amazing selection of special interest books.

FOUR: ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive
Let’s say you’re the type of person who hates bars and clubs and the frentic pace of the night-life scene. You want to take your lovely somewhere truly unique, but alas, art houses and museums are out of your price range. Then head into Burbank and visit my favorite spot in the city: The ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive. This hidden gem was founded with the express purpose of preserving forgotten or lost animated films. Admittance is free: come in, sit at a computer, pop in a disk from their shelves and be blown away by a long forgotten Bugs Bunny WWII short. Or a Ralph Bakshi picture. Or newly-restored footage from the old Superman cartoons. The staff is incredibly enthusiastic and friendly—a must-see for all those who love film and animation.

FIVE: Boba Loca
Once you’ve quenched your thirst for old-school animation, head into downtown Burbank and quench your thirst for everyone’s favorite imported Asian drink: boba tea! Also known as bubble tea, bobas are delicious tapioca pearls added to already delicious Asian milk tea, adding up to a thoroughly delicious experience. Go in and make sure to tell them to make your drink with boba!

How much: Regular-sized drinks with boba are a little under $5.

The only place worth going for boba is Lollicups in Chinatown right after you do dim sum. All of their regular sized boba is $2.50 and the most expensive thing on their menus is $4.95; plus, they have over 150 choices.
